Malaysia Toray Science Foundation (MTSF)


Down Memory Lane …….. 1993 ~ 2013

Thanks to the visionary leadership of the late Tan Sri (Dr.) Katsunosuke Maeda (the Honorary Chairman of MTSF cum the past President/Chairman of Toray Industries, Inc., Japan), MTSF was established through an initial endowment of RM4 million from Toray Japan in 1993.

Pioneered locally by the late Tan Sri Khir Johari (as the Chairman of MTSF) and subsequently chaired by YM Ungku Aziz and Tan Sri Law Hieng Ding, MTSF is well managed by distinguished Malaysian scientific personalities and supported by many stakeholders, namely the various ministries and institutions.

Since inception, the following three (3) yearly programmes are being carried out yearly:

1. MTSF Science and Technology Awards (STA) – RM60 thousand yearly
- To recognize and reward accomplished Malaysian scientists for their outstanding achievements and accomplishments.

2. MTSF Science & Technology Research Grants (STRG) – RM300 thousand yearly
- To provide financial assistance, by way of research grants for young Malaysian researchers/postgraduate students to carry out basic researches.

3. MTSF Science Education Awards (SEA) – RM70 thousand yearly
- To encourage and recognize innovative and interesting science teaching methods among Malaysian secondary school teachers and educators.

Today, MTSF has established itself to be the leading charitable science foundation in the country. Over the last 19 years, MTSF has expended some RM11.5 million in presenting the various awards and grants to the following recipients, besides carrying out the various science and technology activities benefiting to the communities :

• 38 accomplished Malaysian scientists
• 207 young Malaysian scientists / researchers
• 306 Malaysian science teachers / educators

On the occasion of the Foundation’s 20th Anniversary celebration, MTSF would like to put on records its sincere thanks and appreciation to the following personalities, organisations and institutions for their dedications, guidance and supports. Without them, the Foundation would not be what it is today.
