MATH-SHAPE
(MATHEMATICS-LOWER SECONDARY)

KHADIJAH BINTI NOORDIN
SEKOLAH MENENGAH KEBANGSAAN SENTUL (1)
JALAN SENTUL, 51000 KUALA LUMPUR

Background :

MATH-SHAPE is a unique innovation and consists of suitable characteristics in the process of learning and teaching mathematics base on science and technology.

Inadequate knowledge about solid shapes and characteristic is problematic. because this knowledge forms the basis for technical thinking which plays an important role in the development of science and technology.

The ability to look upon something in details and as a global through this game can be taken as a basic for critical and creative thinking among students.

Objectives :

MATH-SHAPE is being created to achieve the following objectives :

  • Recognizing in details shapes of solids.
  • To get to know characteristics of solids.
  • Reinforcement of knowledge regarding solids through games activities.
  • To learn with fun.· Give awareness of shapes and space.
  • To encourage moral values such as cooperation, hardworking and patience.
Benefits for teaching-learning process :
  • MATH-SHAPE is an innovation that brings new experience, stimulates the mind of players and brings them to the 'beauty' of mathematics.
  • MATH-SHAPE enables students to love mathematics, which is considered difficult, by some students.
  • MATH-SHAPE is a suitable teaching aid for teaching topics on solids. The concept of solids and its characteristics can be easily implanted in the student's mind through activities.
  • MATH-SHAPE enables students to study objects in three dimensions.
  • MATH-SHAPE enhances students understanding about the concept of space in life.
Materials :

Materials that are required for MATH-SHAPE are :

  • Cardboard· Colored paper
  • Blue, yellow, brown and green marker pens
  • Green, yellow, red and white colored buttons
Construction of
teaching aids :

The construction of MATH-SHAPE consists of three main parts.

  • The player's card is divided into 5 different types that is shape of solids, layout, number of surface, number of sides and number of edges. The player's card measure 3cm x 4.5cm (refer to 10-D1 and 10-D4).
  • The game board is made from cardboard and measures 62cm x 32cm. The game board is divided into base for Player A, place for frame and base for Player B (refer to 10-D2).
  • Cardboard frame that measures 6cm x 32cm (refer 10-D3). A pocket that measures 5cm x 4cm is pasted on the cardboard frame.
Implementations:

Rules of the game

  • Two players are involved in this game, Player A (leader) and Player B.
  • Player A will insert the name of the solid chosen, on the frame.
  • Player A will arrange the characteristics of solid chosen on the blue base using the blue card.
  • Player B needs to choose the picture and the characteristics of the solid from the red card which the player thinks will coincide with the name of the solid printed on the frame.
  • Using the chosen red card, Player B will try to guess the arrangement of Player A blue card by arranging them on the game board.
  • Player A has to compare his answers with the answers of Player B. Then, place suitable buttons at he buttons base.
  • Player B will continue guessing the answers until he succeeds or until the last row is reached.
  • Marks will be given to Player B who manages to finish the game (that is when all the buttons are green) according to the rows.
  • If the game has not been completed yet even though Player B reaches the finishing row, then Player B will only get marks from the given bonus marks (no additional marks are given).
  • Every player will have the chance to be Player A and Player B with the same number of turns.

Marks

  • At the beginning of the game, 50 bonus marks will be allocated to Player A and B.
  • 10 marks will be deducted from the bonus marks if Player A makes mistakes and Player B will get those 10 marks.
  • Marks for Player B will be counted according to the row the player manages to finish the game and will be added to the bonus marks.
  • Game will be continued in which players will take turns to be Player A and Player B.
  • Total marks of the game will be counted whenever the first and the second round of a game end. The highest marks will be the winner.
Suggestion for modification :
  • MATH-SHAPE can be use to enhance students' understanding in other subject such as chemistry (atom and characteristics).
  • MATH-SHAPE can also be carried out by using rules and method employed in the 'Happy Family' card game.
