Toray Science Foundation, Japan (*Yen 5 Million annually)

Toray Science Foundation, Japan (TSF) was established on June 23, 1960, through a 1 billion yen endowment by Toray Industries, Inc., Japan. Subsequent donations have increased its basic fund to 1.8 billion yen. Recognized by the Japan Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and the Science and Technology Agency under its Civil Law, TSF is aimed at contributing to the advancement of Japanese science and technology by supporting basic researches in science.
Besides its domestic programs, TSF also launches its Toray Science Foundation International Research Grant, to subsidize basic research projects in natural science at overseas universities. Annually, TSF subsidizes basic research projects in the fields of natural science carried out by young scientists/researchers in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Republic of Korea.
Toray Science Foundation established four similar foundations in Asean countries, namely,

  • MALAYSIA TORAY SCIENCE FOUNDATION (MTSF) (August 1993)
  • THAILAND TORAY SCIENCE FOUNDATION (TTSF) (December 1993)
  • INDONESIA TORAY SCIENCE FOUNDATION (ITSF) (June 1994)
  • KOREA TORAY SCIENCE FOUNDATION (KTSF) (January 2018)

Toray Group (Malaysia) (*RM300,000 annually)

Toray invested in manufacturing outside Japan earlier than other Japanese enterprises and established its first subsidiary in Malaysia in the early 1970s. Over the years, the Malaysian operation has grown from strength to strength to be one of Toray’s major investments outside Japan. Today, under the supervision of Toray Industries (Malaysia), TORAY Group (Malaysia) employs around 2,500 employees and generates annual consolidated net sales exceeding USD1 billion. The Group engages in its corporate activities with the concerted commitment of all associates “to have the integrity to do the right thing in the right way.”
